Prosecutors said witnesses will testify that a Brevard County man on trial in Jacksonville intended to kill an unarmed teenager outside a convenience store after an argument over loud music.

Michael Dunn's first-degree murder trial got underway Thursday, one day after lawyers selected a panel of 12 jurors and four alternates.

The 47-year-old software developer from Satellite Beach claims he shot 17-year-old Jordan Davis in November 2012 because he felt threatened and thought the teen had a gun.

There was some speculation over whether Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law would once again be under the microscope at Dunn's trial, as this case shares some similarities with George Zimmerman's trial last year. Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder in the 2012 shooting of Trayvon Martin.

However, Dunn's attorney, Cory Strolla, said this was a case of justifiable homicide.

There's even a familiar name linking the two cases: State Attorney Angela Corey, who had originally charged Zimmerman, is also handling this case.

This time, Corey, herself, is prosecuting Dunn.

Corey interviewed witness Steven Smith, who witnessed the shooting. He said he saw Dunn's gun through the passenger window of Dunn's Jetta, then heard Dunn's voice. He said he saw the gun move and then Dunn fired.

In his opening statement Thursday, prosecutor John Guy -- the same attorney who gave the prosecution's opening statement in the Zimmerman trial -- told jurors Davis posed no threat to Dunn, and that there was no weapon in Davis' vehicle.

Guy described some of Davis' injuries from the gunshot.

"One of [the bullets] had entered his right side, tore through his liver, passed through both of his lungs and shredded his aorta," Guy said.

Dunn's attorney, Cory Strolla, told jurors his client felt threatened and fired in self-defense. Strolla also said Davis threatened Dunn's life during the argument, and under Florida law, Dunn had every right not to be a victim.

Dunn has claimed he saw someone from the back of the SUV point a gun at him, so he pulled out his own gun from his glove box and opened fire into the other vehicle, killing Davis.

“Everybody in the vehicle ducked," Strolla said. "Tommy Storns ducked, Tevin Thompson ducked, Leland Brunson ducked. Know who didn't duck? Jordan Davis. You know why he didn't duck? 'Cause he was getting out of the car with a weapon.”

Strolla also accused Davis' passengers in the car of driving off, possibly to get rid of a weapon. Police said no gun was ever found in the SUV.

If convicted, Dunn faces life in prison.
