Classes have resumed on the Palm Bay campus of Eastern Florida State College after a shooting in a parking lot Thursday sent two people to the hospital, including the shooter.

Counselors were on hand Monday morning for students, staff and faculty returning to the campus.

Palm Bay Police said the shooter, 24-year-old Landrick Hamilton, claimed he was acting in self-defense.

Neither he nor the two other men involved have been charged. The State Attorney’s Office will decide if any of the three men will face criminal charges.

Palm Bay Police said Hamilton was approached by two men who pulled up to him in the school’s parking lot.

Investigators said Amado Contreras and Landyer Contreras started attacking Hamilton with a pool cue. That’s when, according to police, Hamilton reached into his car, pulled out a handgun and shot Amado Contreras in the chest.

Contreras and Hamilton both suffered non-threatening injuries.

The Contreras brothers did not attend school but the college said Hamilton is a full time student, studying chemical technology.

The school said Hamilton has no history of disciplinary problems.

All three are claiming they acted in self-defense.
