SunRail service officially begins May 1.

But during a soft opening scheduled in mid-April, riders will get to take a ride for free.

They’ve already been testing the commuter rail service. From April 15 through April 25, officials are planning to let commuters ride SunRail for free to let riders experience the train service before its grand opening.

“We’ve been working on this for 10 years,” said Noranne Downs with the Florida Department of Transportation. “It’s very exciting to give people another option at the same time as we’re getting this running by May 1st. We’re going to be signing a contract to get 21 miles of I-4 under reconstruction for about five to six years.”

The SunRail service will take riders from DeBary in Volusia County south to Sand Lake Road in Orange County.
