A suspect shot by an Orlando police officer late Thursday morning has died.

The shooting happened on the 1100 block of Soria Avenue, which is just east of South Semoran Boulevard.

Detectives arrived to the home for a follow-up investigation for burglary. When the detectives walked toward the residence, they observed a male sitting inside the vehicle parked in the driveway.

The man has been identified as Alejandro Noel Cordero Rivera, 32.

After the detectives walked up to the parked vehicle, they looked inside and immediately saw the suspect with a gun, police said.

Due to the perceived deadly threat, one of the detectives removed his weapon from its holster and shot the suspect.

"At some point, a firearm was presented by the suspect and our officers opened fire," said Sgt. Frank Chisari, of the Orlando Police Department.

Rivera was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical condition. He died at the hospital.

The two Orlando Police Department detectives weren't injured in the incident, police said. They have been identified as follows:

  • Detective Andre Howard, assigned to Criminal Investigations Division, been with the department since Sept. 2, 1999
  • Officer Antonio Shorter, assigned to North Patrol Division, been with the department since Aug. 19, 2012

Police said Howard shot Rivera. Shorter didn't fire his weapon.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting. The detectives have been placed on paid administrative leave, as a standard procedure, during the investigation.

No other information was released.
