Lake County is giving residents free bikes through a unique program that makes every old bike new again.

The program is called Bicycle Re-Cycle. The program started in 2009 when workers at the county landfill noticed perfectly good bikes being thrown away because children had outgrown them.

The workers would take the bikes, fix up the ones that needed fixing, and make them free to residents.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office and the Eustis Police Dept. have also been donating unclaimed bikes from their lost and found.

Bicycle Re-Cycle has given away 1,000 bikes to Lake County residents since 2009.

To get a free bike through the program, visit the Lake County landfill on County Landfill Road in Tavares. Pick-ups are available Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can also call at 352-343-3776. There is a limit of one bike per household per month. Recipients must be Lake County residents.
