A 53-year-old man from Maryland was killed after the car he was a passenger in was involved in a head-on collision Thursday night in Marion County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Nicholas Williams, 18, of Leonardtown, Maryland, was traveling southbound in the northbound lane of U.S. Route 301 around 10:09 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20.

Kirk Williams, 53, of California, Maryland, was a passenger in the vehicle.

Mary Rivera, 28, and Aveis Hayes, 20, both of Gainesville, were in a car heading northbound in the northbound lane of U.S. Route 301.

Williams was going over a small hill, and both cars were headed directly for each other. Both drivers swerved to avoid the other vehicle, but they both swerved the same direction and collided head-on, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

Six people were transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center. Five people suffered minor injuries

Kirk Williams was pronounced dead at the hospital at 11:54 p.m., the report states.

Charges are pending.
