Plunging temperatures has caregivers at the Brevard Zoo working to keep animals warm, especially those not accustomed to the cold.

They've set up heat lamps and pads in advance of Tuesday's chilly weather and switched them on once the temperature dropped below 60 degrees.

For the chilly night ahead, they are adding more straw and even towels in the animal's areas, along with putting up plywood to block the wind.

Some of the animals are getting fed a little more to ramp up their calories.

“Like our new meerkat exhibit, they had access to their night house all day long, which they have heat inside,” said Zoological Manager Chad Davis. “That way if they couldn't find enough heat inside their bur-roughs beneath the ground, they would have the ability to go inside.”

Some animals had to be sheltered away from their exhibit due to the cold.

Caretakers said even a couple hours in the cold at night can drain their energy.
