The Merita Bread sign, the last remnant of an iconic company in Orlando, is coming down.

For decades the neon red signs and fresh-baked bread smells from the Merita Bread Factory served to welcome I-4 drivers to downtown Orlando. But the factory closed in 2012 when Hostess went bankrupt, taking Merita with it. The factory has not reopened.

The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art in Winter Park is acquiring the neon signs. They were a gift from Maudlin International Trucks of Orlando.

Over Wednesday and Thursday of this week, Jayco Signs and the Morse Museum will work to take the signs down in sections. The work will happen from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days at the former factory on South Division Avenue.

The Morse Museum said it has no immediate plans to display the sign. The museum wants to restore it first.

The Morse Museum is best known for its extensive collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany glass art pieces.
