All Aboard Florida’s plans to build a passenger rail line between Orlando International Airport and Miami continue to move forward and now the private rail company may reconsider a stop in Brevard County.
Port Canaveral is funding a study to look at where a potential train station could be located in Brevard County
Port leaders are hoping that a stop in Port Canaveral is feasible to help cruise passengers get to and from Orlando International Airport.
The Canaveral Port Authority is going to fund a study conducted with the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization to determine if a Brevard County stop would work and where it should be located.
Right now, there are 40,000 people who travel between Orlando International and Port Canaveral every weekend and that’s expected to double in 6 to 7 years.
“It would be wonderful for the cruise passengers to come into Orlando International, get on a train, come over to the port, be able to get off, use our hotels, use our facilities at the beach and our recreation assets, so we see it as a big plus,” said Port Canaveral CEO John Walsh.
All Aboard Florida representatives said they only have plans to stop in Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach but transportation leaders said the private company has had some discussions in the past couple of months, asking for Brevard County as whole to come up with a potential site for a train station.
One of the possibilities is for the passenger train to stop is in Port Canaveral during slower periods of the day, between 10am and 3pm.
All Aboard Florida did not return News 13’s request for comment but they have said down the line, if their Miami-to-Orlando passenger service works, then the Space Coast could be the next stop.
