A 26-year-old woman was killed after the car she was driving crashed into a retention pond on Monday in New Smyrna Beach, police said.

Sarah Marx, of Port Orange, was found dead after a car she was driving crashed into a pond in the Venetian Bay subdivision. Marx was pronounced dead after the vehicle was pulled from the water.

The crash happened around 11:03 a.m. along Airport Road, just north of the intersection with Grotta Avenue, in Volusia Count. Two citizens tried to pull Marx from the vehicle before it completely submerged. Responding New Smyrna Beach Police Department officers were also unsuccessful in rescuing the woman from the car.

The water was estimated to be about 12-feet deep with limited visibility, police said.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office’s dive team was called to recover the silver 2000 Acura four-door car. Investigators found Marx with her seatbelt still buckled. There were no other occupants in the car.

Preliminary investigation revealed the driver was traveling north on Airport Road and drove onto the grass median. The car then struck a light pole before crashing into the lake. There were no skid marks discovered at the scene, police said.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the crash. The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact investigator Jason Reve at 386-424-2220.
