The suspect in the murder of two Ocala women has died in the hospital, police said Wednesday.

Ricardo De Jesus Barrera, 54, died Tuesday night at Shands Hospital, in Gainesville.

Just before 3 p.m. Monday, officers responded to a disturbance at the SpringWood Village Apartments on the 1500 block of Southeast 27th Street.

Police said they were answering a call about multiple shots fired and a suspect fleeing on a motorcycle.

One of the officers chased the motorcycle north on Southeast Lake Weir Avenue and then east on the 1600 block of Southeast 17th Street.

During the pursuit, an Ocala Police Department officer fired shots at Barrera.

Back at the SpringWood Village Apartments where the incident began, police found two dead women: Barrera's ex-girlfriend, Bonnie Motto, 34, and her mother, Julie Motto, 67.

Bonnie Motto's father, Bill, said his daughter tried unsuccessfully to get a restraining order against Barrera earlier Monday. Bill Motto said the order was not granted.

Two children, a 6-year-old girl and 22-month-old boy, were also in the apartment, but neither were injured. The boy is Barrera's son.

Investigators are waiting on an autopsy to see if Barrera died from the crash or from a gunshot wound. Police still aren't saying if he was actually shot, but the Ocala Police Department has placed the officer involved in the incident on paid administrative leave as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement continues to investigate the incident, per standard procedure.
