More golf carts will soon be seen on roads in one Brevard County community now that the county commission has approved new guidelines for golf carts in Viera.

Up until now, golf carts were only allowed on side streets, and that rule was often broken.

The new guidelines allow golf carts to be driven on sidewalks that have a width of at least 8 feet.

Golf carts will still not be allowed on major roadways.

But they will be able to cross busy streets at signalized intersections and designated pedestrian cross walks.

Commissioners had one concern however: children as young as 14 can drive golf carts under the new guidelines.

These new rules come just a few weeks after a Rockledge woman was killed while driving her golf cart in Viera.
