Police arrested a man Tuesday whom they said was caught on camera putting a woman in a choke hold and demanding cash at an ATM in West Melbourne on Monday night.

West Melbourne police arrested 44-year-old Scott Patrick Deason after his own girlfriend and parents turned him in.

Police said Deason's girlfriend was watching the news, saw surveillance images showing the suspect attacking a woman from behind at an ATM, and called 911. Detectives said Deason's parents could be heard on the same 911 call saying the man in the images was their son.

Within hours of releasing the surveillance pictures Tuesday, detectives tracked down Deason at his home and arrested him.

According to police, the victim, a 20-year-old woman, walked up to the Bank of America ATM on West New Haven Avenue just before 8:30 p.m. Monday.

A series of disturbing surveillance pictures from the ATM show a man, whom police say is Deason, walk up behind the woman with his shirt covering his face, and then put his arm around the woman's neck, all in plain view of the teller machine camera.

"As he leaned in toward the ATM, that gave us our clearest image," said West Melbourne police Lt. Richard Cordeau.

Police said Deason held the woman in a chokehold and told her to withdraw a large amount of cash.

But as the man threatened her, detectives said the woman made a potentially life-saving action: She hit her car's panic alarm from her keychain, causing the suspect to take off before he could get any cash.

"Alerting other people around was a good move on her part," said Cordeau.

The victim told police as her attacker fled, she spotted what appeared to be a hammer in his hand.

Police brought K-9 police dogs to the scene, but could not track him down Monday night.

Detectives said the woman was shaken but not seriously hurt.

Deason was taken to the Brevard County Jail. Police said he faces charges of armed robbery and false imprisonment.
