A plane that went missing in April after departing from the Dunnellon Airport in Marion County has been found.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office said a man walking through the woods Sunday night found the plane and skeletal remains at the Pruitt Trail head in the Halpata Tastanaki Preserve, 15430 S.W. County Road 484.

Investigators confirmed they have located Theodore (Ted) Weiss' white experimental type, two-seat, low-wing aircraft with a green stripe and "N229P" on the tail section.

The Florida Wing of the Civil Air Patrol said Weiss flew from Zephryhills to the Marion County Airport in Dunnellon on the morning of Saturday, April 5. He departed that afternoon for a return trip to Pasco County, but he never arrived.

Weiss was reported missing two days later.

The Sheriff's Office said they are working to identify the remains found.

Lucy Huber works at Zephyrhills airport. She believes the remains in the pilot seat belong to Weiss. She said he was a big part of the airport family.

"He was always friendly. He would chat and ask about my day and how my family was. He was just a nice person,” she said. "He would come in and we'd have coffee and donuts. We would celebrate birthdays together and we miss him a lot.”

Ted Coberly hung around the airport with Weiss for years. They would fly together and talk about planes.

"We usually had coffee in the morning. He'd stop by my hangar, I'd go to his hangar and we'd just do some hangar chat,” said Coberly.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration have been notified and will be arriving on scene sometime Monday to begin their investigation.

Dozens of agencies searched 41,000 acres of forest area when Weiss went missing in April, but they were unable to located the man or his aircraft. The Florida Wing of Civil Air Patrol, U.S. Air Force, and volunteers and members of the Hernando, Citrus, Sumter and Marion Sheriff's Offices, Florida Fish and Wildlife, State Emergency Management, Swiftmud and Sarasota K-9 Search and Rescue all took part in the search.
