Could a new Class A baseball stadium be coming to Winter Park?  That’s the question city leaders will be thinking about over the next six weeks.

The Winter Park City Commission met Monday afternoon to discuss the possibly of building a 3,000-seat Minor League Class A Baseball stadium.

City officials are considering locations at Martin Luther King Jr. Park, the UP Development Votech area along U.S. 17-92 and the Ravaudage development north of Lee Road. The furthest and last option is a former tree farm at the Northwest Sports Complex because of its location to the surrounding area.

Winter Park Mayor Kenneth Bradley said residents will not have any new taxes added to fund the stadium if it gets approved.

“An opportunity like this would increase our tax base and by bringing this much economic development is something we certainly need to take time to study,” Bradley said.

The commission will interview residents and create a study over the next 45 days to see if a new stadium would be the right fit to Winter Park.

“The growth of city is essential, so yes, it would increase traffic. But I think the positives here outweigh the negatives,” said Winter Park resident Kate Marrow.

Amy Davidson is also a Winter Park resident and agrees traffic would be an issue.

“I don’t know if that would be a very good idea for that area,” Davidson said. “Jobs are great but I just think traffic would be far worse.”

If approved down the line, the stadium wouldn’t be completed for a couple years and is estimated to cost between $15 million to $22 million.
