While the George Zimmerman case continues in court in Sanford, a town hall meeting Monday night in Orlando focused on a number of key topics affecting the black community.

About 30 people packed into the NAACP branch headquarters in Orlando as community members took part in a discussion not only focusing on the George Zimmerman Trial but also their communities as a whole.

“We’re trying to get the community input as to what they think and they want to see when the NAACP leaves in July – things and issues that affect Orange County,” said branch president Kran Riley.

The issues like “Stand Your Ground” in Florida, as well as black crime and youth crime, were the main topics organizers wanted discussed.

The meeting is a mandate from the national office  - that local branches discuss these topics with the community.

During the George Zimmerman Trial, the NAACP says they do not want people showing up and protesting outside the courthouse.

“We encourage people to stay home because the trial has to take its course," Riley said. "By going down and doing demonstrations and things is not what needs to be happening at this time.”

The 104th National NAACP Convention will take place in Orlando July 13.
