Melbourne Police said a gunman has surrendered after barricading himself inside a home Thursday morning after allegedly assaulting another person inside.

Police said they received a call at about 8:45 a.m. from a person who said they were involved in a disturbance with a man inside a home. The caller told authorities the man assaulted the victim, then pulled a rifle and threatened the victim.

The victim was then able to escape the home.

When officers arrived, they observed the suspect closing the windows and barricading himself inside the home.

“The officers did observe the person inside barricading themselves in the home and things of that nature, due to that and the severity of the charge with the armed assault with a weapon our swat team was called to the scene as well as our crisis negotiation unit,” said Melbourne Police Sgt. Sheridan Shelley.

Surrounding homes were evacuated as a precaution.

The suspect walked out of the house and surrendered to police just after 2 p.m.

The victim was not injured in the battery.
