Just one day after being sued by the American Civil Liberties Union, the Lake County School Board has consented to allow a Gay-Straight Alliance at Carver Middle School, in Leesburg.

The student club will be allowed to meet for the rest of the school year, which is only about a month.

"The discussion on this issue has been complex and longer than anticipated," said Lake County Superintendent Dr. Susan Moxley. "The policy discussion will continue. However, this specific school and student request is being resolved within current laws and guidelines."

Bayli Silberstein, an eighth-grader at the school, spearheaded the effort to start the club, aimed at stopping bullying, harassment and discrimination, particularly against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students.

"I'm just so happy that our club is finally going to be allowed to meet," stated Silberstein. "There's only about a month left of school, but that's still a month we can use to start doing the work to make this school a safer and more welcoming place."

The school board had tentatively approved the proposal for the Gay-Straight Alliance in March, but then voted to table the proposal in April.

Now, the school board said it will continue discussion on revising their policy on student clubs on Monday, May 6, at 3:30 p.m. at Lake Minneola High School.
