Tuesday, February 26, will mark one year since Trayvon Martin was shot and killed in a Sanford neighborhood.

To mark the occasion, Greater Orlando Cares Mentoring group held a tribute in honor of the teenager Sunday night in Pine Hills.

Organizers used a portion of the aribute to Trayvon Martin to honor local efforts to recruit, train and motivate mentors, especially those who have focused on helping underprivileged and at-risk children.

Natalie Jackson, one of the attorneys for Trayvon Martin’s family was the event’s keynote speaker. Jackson told young people, by just speaking out, they can create social change.

Jackson said young people might not realize it, but they showed how powerful their voice was when they helped spread 17-year-old Trayvon Martin's story on social media.

“This was a movement started by 2.2 million people (who signed an online petition) and started by young people of all different races and ethnicities and it was a movement for equal justice,” shared Jackson.

Teodora Dillard, 17, from Ocoee took Jackson’s message to heart.

“I think from what she was saying, I can actually take a leap and actually organize an event myself and try to spread awareness about violence and stereotypes and discrimination,” she said.

Teodora, who attended the event with her younger sister, Christiana, believes they are both ready for action.

“Even though we are young, and we might not have as much experience as adults do. We can actually make a change in the world, through social media and just getting the message across, talking to people,” Teodora added.

“We have a foundation, the Trayvon Martin Foundation, the purpose of the foundation is to encourage young people to speak out about different social issues. It’s also to fight against violence, and senseless violence in the community to show them that they have a voice,” Jackson continued.

Jackson said she will remember Trayvon Martin by attending the Million Hoodies Candlelight vigil Tuesday night in New York City.

Meanwhile, Sanford-area community leaders will hold a peace rally in Trayvon Martin’s honor Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Fort Mellon Park in Sanford.
