Walt Disney World plans to close both monorail lines to the Magic Kingdom for maintenance starting in January during non-peak hours on weekdays, between 11:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.

A Disney spokesperson confirmed the planned maintenance and monorail closures Wednesday. The work, set to begin Jan. 21, 2014 and continue through the end of March, only impacts the Magic Kingdom Express and Resort lines. The monorail to Epcot will operate as normal.

The Magic Kingdom monorail lines are expected to be open to guests before 11:30 a.m. and after 7 p.m. on weekdays, and all day on weekends.

While the Magic Kingdom monorail lines are down, additional buses, ferry boats and other watercraft will be available from Disney Resorts and the Transportation and Ticket Center, located at the Magic Kingdom parking lot.

According to a report by the unofficial fan website WDWMagic.com, Disney has begun installing infrastructure to support automation of the monorail system, though it was not immediately clear if the maintenance starting in January was related to that.

It was also not immediately clear if maintenance work would take place on the upcoming Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Presidents Day holidays, both of which have historically drawn above-normal winter crowds at the Magic Kingdom.
