Two people were killed in a 5-car crash that closed Interstate 4 near downtown Orlando early Saturday morning.

The accident was so bad police were forced to close the westbound lanes between Lee Road and Par Street for about six hours.

Police said the driver of a Ford Explorer was driving the wrong way on I-4 around 5:40 a.m.

According to police, calls to 911 described the vehicle heading east in the westbound lanes.

“This is probably one of the worst accidents I’ve witnessed in my twenty years,” said Lt. Jason Batura.

The SUV collided head-on with a Dodge Neon. Both drivers were killed.

Police said three more cars crashed because they didn’t have a chance to stop in time after topping a small hill near Par Street.

“It’s hard to see over that. So, if you’re coming at a normal speed of 55, 60 miles per hour, it would be difficult to stop, especially when people were actually in the middle of the roadway,” Batura said.

Others involved in the crash had minor injuries.

Investigators said the woman who caused the crash was spotted driving the wrong way as far back as downtown.

The names of the people involved in the accident have not been released.
