An Orlando man could be facing federal charges after he blew up his home.
Fire officials said they were called for a report of an explosion around 8:50 p.m. Saturday at a home on Alfred Drive.
Orange County Sheriff's Office deputies said William Denmark, 48, told fire officials that he was making fireworks.
But there was no fire, a spokesperson for the fire department said, adding that it was now an investigation for law enforcement.
Deputies said nearby homes were evacuated as the investigation continued late into the evening.
Explosives and materials for making them were found inside the home.
"Denmark was manufacturing his own black powder in a ball mill when it exploded," the investigating deputy wrote in an arrest report, adding that he also saw tubes with a wick and drying black powder.
Denmark told the deputy, according to the report, he knew what he was doing was dangerous.
Officials said an FBI task force and agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives would assist in the investigation.
The home showed signs of damage from the explosion with cracks in the walls and blown out windows.
Denmark was arrested and locally charged with possession and discharge of a destructive device.
