A man from Sarasota was critically injured early Thursday morning after he was hit by a car on Interstate 75 in Sumter County while helping other cars involved in a crash.

The Florida Highway Patrol said around 5:26 a.m. Christopher Eric Jenkins, 37, had stopped to help people involved in a crash in the northbound lanes of I-75 near the 319 Milepost. FHP said Jenkins had walked across both northbound lanes and was standing in the inside travel lane when a car driven by Joseph Farrell, 41, of Sarasota approached the accident scene and was unable to avoid a collision and hit Jenkins.

Jenkins was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center in critical condition.
