The Orlando City Council voted unanmously Monday to use government money to help pay for a soccer stadium.

In August, the Tourist Development Council (TDC) agreed on a $20 million pledge for the stadium, which needs to be approved by both Orange County and the City of Orlando Board of Commissioners. Orange County will vote on Oct. 22.

Seminole County has pledged $2 million towards the proposed $85 million stadium.

If both Orlando and Orange County Commissioners approve funding, Orlando will be able to enter into final negotiations with Major League Soccer to award an expansion team to Central Florida.

Owners of the Orlando City Soccer team want to bring professional soccer to Orlando, but MLS will not give them a team if they do not have a new stadium.

City leaders want to build a new 18,000 seat stadium near the Amway Center.
