New documents released in the George Zimmerman case show several drafts of notes from the lead detective in the case, Chris Serino.

Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara released the 50-page document Tuesday.

Detective Chris Serino wrote a handful of drafts about the investigation and what happened the night 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by George Zimmerman.

Serino was the detective who originally suggested Zimmerman be charged with second-degree murder.

The documents show that Serino changed his recommendation from second-degree murder to manslaughter. Zimmerman was never immediately arrested on either charge, and it was over a month before Zimmerman was arrested, after state officials bowed to public pressure and appointed a special prosecutor.

Natalie Jackson, attorney for Trayvon Martin's family, contends that someone pressured Serino to change his recommendation. She also points to an email from Sanford Police Captain Robert O'Connor, which praises Serino and the investigative team for their work on the investigation.

"In spite of the beating we are taking in the court of public opinion, it is important to reach back and realize that we are all professionals and we do what we do for the right reason, not a popular outcome. Two days ago, I found myself second guessing my decisions and my direction on this case. Last night, the Chief and I sat in his office and we commented that we both had assured ourselves that we had in fact followed the right path in this investigation, yet it seemed that we as an agency were being persecuted for having done something horribly wrong. After much reflection, I no longer feel uneasy about our direction."

“This seems like a CYA from the Sanford Police Department. They did not do a good job. They did not do a thorough investigation in this case. If they would have, George Zimmerman would have been arrested that night or very soon after,” Jackson said.

George Zimmerman's attorney Mark O'Mara has not yet responded to our questions.

George Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin in February during a confrontation at a townhouse complex. Zimmerman says he shot Martin in self-defense.
