A 76-year-old woman drove right through the front door and crashed her car in a Publix grocery store in Palm Coast.

Investigators said they were not sure why the woman, Thelma Wagenhoffer, drove straight through the exit into the crowded store.

“It's just not something you expect to see when you're just going in grocery shopping on a Saturday afternoon,” said Palm Coast resident Keith Goldstein.

Goldstein was shopping with his wife Linda, as he headed for the meat department while she headed towards the pharmacy.

“I said well I'm going to check my blood pressure. I never got to check my blood pressure. I heard this real loud explosion, like a bomb noise. I turned my head and here came this car come flying in at a good speed,” said Linda.

The car ended up stopping near the express checkout lane, but not before ten people were hurt in the crash.

One of them was pinned underneath Wagenhoffer’s car. Shoppers said Publix employees saved the man's life.

Stories emerge of heroes

“The meat manager got around 20 people together after they got the two people that were pinned in front of the car; they got them out of the way. They actually lifted this car up and they pulled him out from under the car, which was amazing to me,” said Mark Tsistinas.

The man rescued from under the car was taken to the hospital in critical condition.  The victim's family members said he was sitting on a bench outside the store having a cup of coffee when he was run over.

He was flown to Halifax Center in critical condition.

Witnesses say the elderly driver didn't realize what happened - stepping out of her car, repeatedly saying “Where are my keys?” and “I need to call my husband.”

Workers said she was clearly in shock.

“I had waited on her earlier because she's a regular customer. She's one of our customers. She always gets turkey and Swiss. I always know her. I couldn't believe it was her car,” said Publix employee Gloria Quinteros.

Investigators say victims ranged in ages from 86 to 3 months old. Shoppers said it was a miracle the youngest victim survived.

“It was just blood everywhere, there were bodies everywhere. There was one little baby, she was actually in a car seat being walked through the store with her mother. The car clipped the car seat, knocked the car seat out of the mother's hands. The car seat flipped a couple of times with the baby. We heard the baby is okay. God bless, thank God,” said Keith.

After the crash, dozens of people stood outside the store in amazement.

Publix executives decided to let clean-up crews work, keeping the store closed since 1:30 p.m.

A Publix spokesperson said the store should be back up open Sunday morning.

This crash comes just weeks after a plane crashed into another Publix in DeLand on April 2.
