Parents are now in fear for their children's safety at a Sanford school after a police car was shot at several times at the school's parking lot.

The shooting happened early Tuesday morning on the grounds of Bentley Elementary right across the street from the The Retreat at Twin Lakes, where Trayvon Martin was killed by George Zimmerman.

A place where emotions have been high for several weeks now seems to be reaching a breaking point.

“A place where I used to feel safe has turned into chaos,” said Dawn Richards, who lives in the neighborhood now dubbed “the Zimmerman neighborhood.” Her 7-year-old son goes to Bentley Elementary.

“I'm sending my son to school, I want him to be safe,” said Ernestine Vann, also a parent of a child at Bentley.

Police say the cop car was parked at Bentley Elementary to deter tour buses from parking on school grounds to show off the Trayvon Martin memorial, across the street from the school and right outside the neighborhood where Trayvon was shot and killed.

The vehicle was vacant, and while police say they don't know if the shooting is related to the Trayvon killing scandal, parents feel it is and fear it may happen again.

“I worry for my son's safety and I know I'm not the only parent,” Richards said.

Now residents and parents are asking the Trayvon Memorial be moved to a different location.
