The judge handling the Trayvon Martin case officially signed off on letting attorneys for George Zimmerman acquire Martin's school records.

Judge Debra Nelson ruled more than a month ago that Zimmerman's attorneys could get the records, but Thursday we learned Nelson signed an order allowing the subpoena of the records.

George Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin in February, killing him. Zimmerman says he shot Martin in self-defense.

Trayvon Martin's family and the state attorney's office sought to keep the records out of the case, claiming they were not relevant. Among the records will include information about suspensions and disciplinary action -- including the 10-day suspension Martin was serving when school officials found an empty marijuana bag.

Because of the subpoena, the schools now must hand over those records.
