The Largo Police Department is investigating a March 23 fatal shooting involving an officer that took place during a traffic stop.

Officials said the incident occurred at the Wawa gas station at 1215 N. Missouri Avenue. During the traffic stop, the suspect driver reportedly attempted to pin the officer, Ofc. Matthew Steiner, between his vehicle and the gas pumps.

Steiner shot at the suspect driver in self-defense and struck him. The suspect was transported to Largo Medical Center, where he died.

In the hours following the shooting police confirmed that the suspect was alone in his vehicle at the time of incident and had a criminal record, though they didn't not provide specifics. The identity of the suspect was not released, as next of kin have not yet been notified.

Steiner was transported to Morton Plant Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
