Students at Lee Elementary Magnet School are adjusting to a new campus after their school caught fire last week.

  • Students sharing classrooms at Lockhart Elementary
  • School leaders said transition went smoothly

Lee students are for the time being sharing classrooms with Lockhart Elementary students. Monday was their first day back in class since the fire.

"I like it," said 5-year-old Yancy Pollock.

"When he got into class and saw his teacher, his face kind of lit up," said parent Jeanine Auguste.

A counselor visited the school to speak with students and staff who may have questions after the fire.

Teachers also talked about the change in their new classrooms. Even with new bus routes and bigger classes, school leaders said the transition to a new environment was a smooth one.

"The kids were more resilient than the adults were," said Lee Principal Beverly Smith. "We were the ones who were in panic mode. We were the ones thinking, 'How is the day going to go?'"

Parents said they're relieved the school has made the transition smoother for the students.

"I think they understand what happened to the kids, and they're trying to make it easier for them," said parent Sarah Cannon.

District counselors are expected to return to Lockhart Elementary Tuesday to continue to help Lee staff, students and parents adjust to their new environment.

The principal of Lee Elementary said she's planning a school family celebration on their new campus at Lockhart, so the entire Lee community can come together.
