How many times have you been at a red light and thought, "There's got to be a better way to manage this traffic?"

For Perry Goosie, who has been driving Ulmerton Road for nearly 20 years, construction has been a big part of his drive.

At the intersection of Ulmerton and 58th Street, the construction is done, but Perry would like to see the state take the signal one step farther.

"If you pull into the turn lane, and you're not up here stopped before it starts to turn, then you wait through the entire cycle," he said. "And it'll go around, and it's slow."

Left turn lane traffic there has a protected green arrow from Ulmerton to 58th Street. That arrow goes from green to red, and any traffic still in the turn lane is stopped until the next green cycle.

That's not the case to the north, where 58th Street intersects with Roosevelt Boulevard.

"If you go on down 58th Street to Roosevelt, they have the flashing light for making the turn," Goosie said. "So it turns red, then it turns amber and you have plenty of room to make a turn. Why can't you?"

Bay News 9 Real Time Traffic Expert Chuck Henson said the flashing yellow arrow would be a good fit there.

There are large gaps in oncoming traffic, and it seems unnecessary to have turn lane traffic wait when they could safely make the turn.

Henson asked David Botello with the Florida Department of Transportation if they'd look at making the change.

"We will have our traffic operations team look into the possibility of installing a four-section flashing arrow at this location," Botello said. "It should take about four to six weeks to schedule, study and complete the evaluation."
