No matter where you live, you can help the people impacted by Hurricane Harvey. But beware of phony charities.

  • Beware of charity scams during natural disasters:
  • 1. Watch out for bogus websites, emails, fake crowdfunding campaigns
  • 2. Steer clear of suspicious websites, unsolicited emails & phone calls
  • 3. Never open emails claiming to show disaster photos; could be virus

Scam artists attempt to capitalize on Americans’ generosity after a major crisis. They will use things like bogus websites, emails, social media accounts, and fake crowdfunding campaigns.

Officials say it’s best to steer clear of suspicious websites and beware of unsolicited emails and phone calls.

They also warn to never open emails claiming to show photos of disaster areas because they may be viruses hackers can use to steal your information.

And before you donate, make sure to do your homework on the organization to ensure your money is going to the right place.
