Hurricane Gert is now moving rapidly toward the east-northeast near 39 mph and this motion is expected to continue today.

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 100 mph. It will soon be moving over substantially colder water and Gert is likely to lose its tropical characteristics by tonight.

Swells generated by Gert will continue to affect the coast of the northeastern United States and Atlantic Canada through tonight.

Also in the tropics, we are watching three tropical waves in the central and eastern Atlantic Ocean.  The first one is getting better organized as it moves westward toward the Caribbean Sea. An Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft is scheduled to investigate the disturbance this afternoon, if necessary.

The second one appears to be taking a slightly more northerly track and could go just north of Puerto Rico this weekend then could come close to the U.S. next week.

The third wave is in the far eastern Atlantic Ocean and is producing disorganized showers and storms. Gradual development is possible as it moves toward the central Atlantic.
