A well-known piece of Lakeland history is being torn down. The Lakeland Yacht and Country Club has been a landmark on Lake Hollingsworth for nearly a hundred years, but club members decided it was time to replace it with something new.

  • New facility to be built in place of club
  • New club to pay homage to the old

Members said the problem plagued building was too expensive to repair, so the old yacht and country club is being torn down to make way for a new facility.

“And ended up two, two and a half million dollars more to rehab the old club than build something much more efficient,” Board member Ron Clark said.

The club has been a fixture on the south side of Lake Hollingsworth since 1924. Even though the old building is being torn down and replaced with something new, members want to preserve what history that they can—like old ceiling timers.

Steve Buck oversees about a dozen storage units where anything and everything that can be salvaged will be reused in the new club—from old chairs to lighting fixtures.

Although the new $6 million club will look modern, it will still pay homage to the old.

“But the building itself, when it’s over, will be even prettier and it will look in many ways the same,” Clark said.

The new Lakeland Yacht and Country Club should be open in the summer of next year.
