A Valrico man is now behind bars after attacking a Polk County deputy Tuesday.

  • Polk deputy attacked while trying to talk with crash suspect
  • Steven Wilson arrested on six charges
  • Wilson crashed vehicle, left scene of crime
  • Suspect attacked deputy trying to speak with him

Officials said it started when Steven Wilson, 31, rear-ended a car on Shepherd Road in Lakeland then fled the scene.

Wilson also hit a garbage can and a light pole before walking away from the crash.

Officials said the other victims involved approached Wilson to make sure he was OK. He then handed over his credit card and told them to use it to pay for the damages—then kept on walking.

A deputy spotted Wilson walking on County Line Road and tried to talk to him. That’s when he attacked the deputy, officials said.

According to officials, while the two were rolling on the ground, Wilson ripped off the deputy’s radio, preventing him from calling for backup.

The deputy was eventually able to use his stun-gun to gain control of Wilson.

Wilson is being held in the Polk County Jail on $4,750 bond.

He is charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving injury, resisting arrest without violence, resisting arrest with violence, depriving officer of means of communication, battery on a law enforcement officer, and refusing to sign a citation.
