Buying car insurance isn’t easy. But when compared to buying health insurance, the task seems much easier.
U.S. Vice President Mike Pence believes both should be simple.
He says President Donald Trump’s proposal to allow Americans to buy health insurance across state lines would make it the same as "the way you buy car insurance" today.
PolitiFact Florida heard that claim and gave it a FALSE rating on the Truth-O-Meter.
Writer Josh Gillin says they want to make health insurance so it doesn't have to meet some minimum requirements or follow regulations between states. They want to open that up and allow just one kind of health policy to be sold everywhere without having to conform to those regulations.
“Now, what Pence is saying is that car insurance works that way, but he's wrong. He's making what one expert said was a "false analogy" here, and he actually is getting it backwards,” Gillan said. “Car insurance works the same way health insurance does. States have their own laws and regulations about how it's supposed to work, and really, there's no difference there between how health insurance works and car insurance works.”
For that reason, Vice President Pence’s claim received a FALSE rating.
