A woman was accidentally shot last August during a Citizens Police Academy Training in Punta Gorda.

Newly released surveillance video reveals more details into what happened that day.

The video shows Mary Knowlton stepping to the front of the crowd to participate in a ‘shoot, don’t shoot’ scenario.

Officer Lee Coel played the suspect and fired his personal gun at Knowlton. The video shows Knowlton dropping to the ground.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said it took a moment for anyone to respond because most thought it was all part of the exercise.

The video shows Officer Coel running over to Knowlton on the ground, after realizing she had actually been shot with real bullets.

Several officers then jumped into action to call the paramedics.

Knowlton’s husband was only ten feet away from her when the incident occurred.

“He turned her over and she looked horrible. Blood all over the place, and I thought ‘oh my God.’ There was maybe five people who were trying to save her,” Gary Knowlton said.

Knowlton died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, officials said.

Coel was terminated from the police department, even though the FDLE found no evidence that Coel intended to shoot and kill Knowlton.

Coel will appeal his termination at a hearing today, April 20. He has pleaded not guilty to a felony first-degree manslaughter charge.

Punta Gorda Police Chief Tom Lewis is charged with second-degree misdemeanor culpable negligence. He is on paid administrative leave.
