A suspect was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon after a suspicious package was reported near the White House grounds, according to the U.S. Secret Service.

The agency tweeted at about 10:42 a.m., stating it was investigating a suspicious package. Roads in the area were closed as the investigation continued.

A security perimeter was established, and members of the public and media were moved to a safe distance, the agency said.

About an hour later, the Secret Service said via Twitter that a suspect had been taken into custody.

As of 12:19 p.m., the grounds around the White House were cleared and all roads were back open.
