Fire crews working the Frostproof brushfire the past two weeks hope to have the fire fully contained Friday.

  • 5,500 acres have now burned, no one injured
  • Fire about 95 percent contained
  • Officials hope to have fire contained Friday

The fire is about 95 percent contained.

Only a few firefighters have remained on scene to monitor the remaining hot spots. All the specialized firefighting crews have been sent home.

About 5,500 acres have burned in the area near County Road 630 and Highway 60, destroying about a dozen homes. No injuries have been reported but several pets and wild animals were killed.

On Thursday, firefighters mapped the boundaries of the fire line. Fire officials said they remain confident that as long as things go well Friday, any remaining flames will be brought under control.

The Florida Forest Service said rain during the previous days helped put out flames.
