One of the major questions after Sen. Jack Latvala announced his resignation is who exactly will replace him in the 16th District.

The district is in parts of both Pinellas and Pasco counties and will not be represented in the upcoming session because of Latvala's decision.

Both supervisors of elections in the counties have a lot of work ahead of them in 2018.

"What's going to happen now is I'm going to be contacted by the Department of State Division of Election from Tallahassee, who at the request of the governor will schedule a date for both the primary and a general special election to replace Latvala in the 16th District for the Florida State Senate," said Brian Corley, Pasco County's supervisor of elections.

Corley said the special election will take time. Candidates will have to qualify, and early and absentee voting will have to be held.

The session starts Jan. 9. Latvala's resignation takes effect Jan. 8.

"I haven't looked at all the dates yet because this is, literally, couldn't be more breaking news if you tried," Corley said.
