Former Orlando Magic star and philanthropist Tracy McGrady spent his Saturday giving back to the community he came from.

  • McGrady hosted "Community Empowerment Day"
  • Former NBA star partnered with city Parks and Recreation Department
  • Event featured leadership, life skills workshops

The Auburndale native met with fans and local youth at his 'Community Empowerment Day' at the Auburndale Community Center.

"I'll never forget where I came from and I have a special place in my heart for these kids here," McGrady said.

The seven-time NBA All-Star partnered with the city’s parks and recreation department to put on the event. The event featured different workshops for middle and high school students aimed at teaching leadership, life skills, and goal setting.

McGrady said he hopes his story of success will be an inspiration.

"Considering what's going on in our society with our kids, you just want to encourage them and empower them and let them know we care about them," McGrady said.

McGrady also spoke to Auburndale High School students at a pep rally on Friday.

Some of the students McGrady met with Saturday came to the event with life goals already in mind.

"Maybe a doctor," mused student James Edouard. "And if I could make it to the NBA, go to the NBA."

"I was thinking of becoming a lawyer," said student Chad Stephens. "I want to go to law school."

The teens said that McGrady is a prime example that with a lot of hard work, anything is possible.

"I think it just shows that no matter where you came from you can be successful in life," said Stephens. "No matter what obstacles are put in your way, whether you're in a small town or huge city, it can happen for anyone."
