A local WWII veteran is finally awarded his long overdue service medals more than 70 years after joining the Navy.

  • Jim Shanyfelt, 89, served in WWII and the Korean War
  • In his family, Shanyfelt says, services was considered an honor
  • He was awarded his service medals Friday in Largo, 70 years late

“I think there is nothing better,” Jim Shanyfelt said. “This is the best country in the world and that’s a fact.”

Shanyfelt enlisted in 1944. He was just 17-years-old at the time and following in the footsteps of his two older brothers. His father also served in the Navy during WWI.

“I felt that was what you were supposed to do,” Shanyfelt said. “I was just proud to serve."

Shanyfelt was recognized for his service on Friday by Congressman David Jolly. The Congressman presented the 89-year-old with nine overdue service medals and awards.

Shanyfelt said the ceremony brought back many memories of both WWII and the Korean War.

“I was with a great crew, a great ship,” Shanyfelt said. “I don’t dwell on anything that was bad. I don’t ignore it. I know it’s there but I don’t think about it.”

Jolly’s office also honored 5 other veterans and their families at the ceremony, which took place at the Armed Forces History Museum in Largo.
