One of the victims in the Orlando nightclub massacre is 25-year-old Amanda Alvear of Polk County. She lived in Davenport with her parents.

  • Amanda Alvear hid in bathroom during shooting
  • Alvear was at the club with best friend, who was also killed
  • She was studying to be a nurse and had been a volunteer at a local hospital

Alvear was actually feeding Snapchat video of her night at the club Saturday evening. In the video, you can see people dancing and having a good time. Then as the video shows Amanda's face, shot after shot rings out in the club. Then the feed ends.

"That Snapchat was taken just before she ran to hide in the restrooms because people were being trampled on the floor,” said her brother Brian Alvear. “She didn't feel she could make it to an exit."

Brian Alvear said his sister’s friend named Kenny made it out of the club and kept trying to call Amanda who was still inside. "And she just kept saying, 'I'm hiding in the bathroom. I'm hiding in the bathroom.' He heard some more shots and that's the last we hear from her.”

Family members all gathered at the Alvear home waiting for news.

"It's a complicated situation because you want to be positive but you want to be prepared for the worst," he said.

The worst news came early Monday morning when an FBI agent and sheriff’s deputy showed up at the home. The news that Amanda had been killed was delivered first to Amanda’s parents.

"I come back in and I see my mother breaking down and they told me and I held my mom and we cried,” said Brian Alvear.

Amanda Alvear was at the club with her best friend Mercedez Flores of Davenport. Flores was also killed.

Brian Alvear said his sister was studying to be a nurse and had been a volunteer at a local hospital. He described her as a loving person who just wanted to help people.

Family members have set up a fundraising page to pay for funeral and another other expenses.
