Pasco County authorities continue to investigate an accident in rural Spring Hill on Saturday in which a woman ran over her 2-year-old son's foot on a riding lawn mower.

Tiffany May Collins, 33, was riding a commercial zero-turn mower at the family's property Orange Drive when she saw Zayden Lane Collins running toward her.

Relatives said she shut the mower off but the blades were still spinning when Zayden slipped on the wet grass and fell under the mower.

First responders packed the amputated leg on ice and had the boy transported to Tampa General Hospital.

"They were able to save the leg but at about three inches above the ankle," said the boy's uncle, Christopher Little. "From that down is lost."

Little said Zayden is aware of what happened and tells people the lawnmower ate his toes. He'll undergo another surgery either Monday or Tuesday.

Authorities initially didn't release the names of the mother and child. Zayden, nicknamed "Bean," turns 3 next month.

This is at least the second such accident in the Tampa Bay area in 27 months. In April 2013, 2-year-old Ireland Nugent lost both legs below her knees when her father accidentally backed over her on a riding lawn mower in the family's Palm Harbor driveway.

The Collins family has set up a GoFundMe account to raise money for expenses related to the accident.
