The sexual assault suspect killed last week by detectives apparently planned to attack a woman he was "obsessed" with, Lakeland police said.

Police said David Cuevas, 42, had 725 9mm rounds, leg restraints, handcuffs, a knife and binoculars in his Nissan Xterra. In his hotel room, they found a duffle bag that contained rope, duct tape, chains, a stun gun and more leg restraints.

Police said Cuevas, who was charged with kidnapping and raping his ex-girlfriend, also had the victim's name tattooed on his body, "indicating his obsession with her."

"It is apparent that this violent offender was intent of committing yet another senseless crime which possibly would have been the abduction and murder of the victim had not our detectives intervened," Sgt. Gary Gross said in a media release.

Cuevas was shot and killed Thursday night on Socrum Loop Road in Lakeland. Police said thought he was meeting his ex-girlfriend, who he had been texting, when he realized that he had been set up by detectives, who were trying to arrest him.

Cuevas ran from the detectives, who started chasing him in what police describe as a "running gun battle."

Police say the detectives saw him pull out his gun, so they fired 18 gunshots at him.

Seven of those gunshots hit Cuevas, and he died at the scene.

Cuevas had fled to Pennsylvania to avoid the sexual battery and armed kidnapping warrant, but authorities arrested him there. Cuevas was released on $35,000 bond and began making his way back to Lakeland.

"There is no additional information at this time as to why David Cuevas was allowed to bond out in Pennsylvania," Gross said.
