A Lakeland man was shot by police Monday after officers say he answered his door armed with a handgun.
The man, identified as Wesley Lee Cook, remains at Lakeland Regional Health in critical condition.
According to Lakeland police, Shannon Wood called authorities just before 9 p.m. to ask for assistance in retrieving personal items from a home at 1563 Turtle Rock Drive.
Wood said she was previously staying at the home but left and was now trying to avoid an altercation with Cook in the home.
"She got into an argument with her boyfriend of some sorts," Sgt. Gary Gross said. "She told her he had taken her phone."
When officers arrived and knocked on the front door, one reported seeing a nude Cook inside the home approach the door with what appeared to be a handgun.
"He answered the door with a firearm in his hand after being told not to, nude," Gross said. "That tells us maybe there are some other things going on."
Both officers backed up towards the garage while still giving commands for Cook to drop the handgun, police said.
Cook refused to drop the gun and was still armed when he answered the door, police said.
Officer Paul Dunn, 46, fired several rounds at Cook, police said. It is unclear how many shots were fired, officials said.
Cook was transported to the hospital. He has not yet been charged witha crime.
No officers were injured.
Dunn, a Lakeland police officer for two and a half years, has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
