An armed carjacking Sunday night ended after an Orange County Sheriff's Office deputy shot the suspect.

A victim called 911 at 9:53 p.m. to report a "violent carjacking," deputies said.

The suspect, 19-year-old James Sanders, was later seen by deputies in the stolen Orange Hummer near Balboa Drive and Pine Hills Road.

Deputies began following Sanders, who eventually exited the vehicle and took off running with a gun, deputies said.

"At that point, the deputy feared for his safety and fired at the suspect, who continued to run with the firearm and was struck," said Capt. Angelo Nieves, of the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Sanders was listed to be in stable condition.

No one else was injured in the shooting.

Deputies said Sanders has a violent criminal history, including domestic violence and drug charges.

The deputy involved in the incident has been with the agency for more than 10 years.
