A sinkhole in the Winter Haven Square Plaza grew from a small depression into a massive sinkhole Thursday.

According to authorities, the hole opened up in the parking lot at 6031 Cypress Gardens Boulevard. That is across the street from Legoland.

The hole started out small right behind Clare Barroso's car.

“I ran out and right behind my back tire was where the hole started. Now there’s no parking spot there,” said Barroso, who moved her car.

So far, there has been no structure damage to the building, which houses Publix, K-Mart and other smaller businesses.

Several businesses have been evacuated as a precaution. This does not include Publix or K-Mart but a nail shop, clothing store and Chinese restaurant.

“Those businesses are located directly in front of the sinkhole which is about 35 to 40 feet from the sidewalk right now,” said Brian Swain, property manager.

Officials said the hole is approximately 70 feet wide and 15 feet deep. Geologists used ground penetrating radar to evaluate the sinkhole.

Experts and the property manager said the hole isn’t growing fast, so for now they’re playing the waiting game for the ground to level out.

In the meantime, the big hole is drawing even bigger crowds.

“It’s really big. Like deeper than a swimming pool,” said Analyn Noche.

“It’s phenomenal and amazing. Not in a good way,” said Julie Hecmanczuk.

Security will be on site around the clock to watch the sinkhole and make sure no one gets too close. In the meantime, experts are hoping the ground will level out and they can begin to start repairs.

No injuries have been reported.
