A pygmy hippo was born two weeks ago at Lowry Park Zoo, and now the zoo is asking the public to help name the newborn.

The 2-week-old female calf was born Oct. 11 to its mother, Zsa Zsa. To celebrate, the zoo is holding a contest to name the 14.5-pound baby.

The zoo's animal care team selected several Swahili names that start with the letter Z, in honor of the baby hippo's name. The name that receives the highest number of votes will be announced as the winner during a big baby shower on Saturday, Nov. 1.

Here are the names:

  • Zahra (pronounced Za-rah) “flower”
  • Zawadi (pronounced Za-WAY-dee) “gift”
  • Zuri (pronounced Zoo-ree) “beautiful”

Three voters will be selected randomly to win a family four-pack of zoo admission tickets to the baby shower. Guests can enjoy music and entertainment, sweet treats, special activities and more.

Also, zoo attendees who wear pink to the party on Nov. 1 can receive half-price daytime zoo admission.

To vote, visit http://lowryparkzoo.com/contest/ by 5 p.m. on Oct. 30.
