  • City in touch with FIFA World Cup bid group
  • Mayor's office received formal bid documents Friday
  • Orlando has hosted several major sporting events

The City Beautiful recently has played host to several other major sporting events, such as WWE’s Wrestlemania in April, the NFL’s Pro Bowl in January and Copa America last year.

As for facilities, Orlando has a new major league soccer stadium, where both Orlando City and the Orlando Pride teams play.

Also, Camping World Stadium underwent a $207.7 million renovation in 2014.

A spokesperson for Mayor Buddy Dyer's office issued the following statement in response to inquiries about contact between the city and the bidding group:

"The City of Orlando has been formally contacted to be a part of the group putting together a joint bid for the US, Canada and Mexico to host World Cup Soccer in 2026.

We have expressed our interest in hosting this high profile event and believe we have a track record of proven success in hosting international events like this, including most recently WWE Wrestlemania, COPA and the NFL Pro Bowl.  Additionally, Orlando has a passionate following for the game of soccer – adding both MLS and WSL teams and opening a soccer-specific stadium in just the last few years.

We received the formal bid documents on Friday and are currently evaluating the bid and what this would involve from our community."
